A few years ago the municipality set up a pedestrian crossing across the Berg River Boulevard, obviously to establish a safe crossing for the increasing numbers of people who are enjoying the beautiful Paarl Arboretum – thank you very much.
But the problem is that just about no vehicle adheres to this crossing, speeding across while people are waiting to cross.
And especially minibus taxis seem to actually accelerate here when they see people crossing.
Also, the road sign indicating the crossing on the southern leading lane is obstructed by tree branches which for years have not been trimmed.
This is a very dangerous situation and it is only a matter of time until someone using the crossing is struck by a car. The municipality will have to seriously take a look at this and if they want to promote safety, they are going to have to place speed bumps here.
