Paarl East police held an awareness campaign last Wednesday (20 April). Officers including, vispol head Col Mzimkulu Jack, walked the streets of Chicago interacting with the community about several socio-economic issues plaguing the area.

“We did awareness about drugs, abuse of liquor and domestic violence. The campaign was done together with the department of correctional services. We also did a school search at Klein Nederburg Secondary and Paulus Joubert Secondary.”

The joined operation reached approximately 250 people and 70 learners at the schools. Jack says they found dagga and knives on some learners, but it wasn’t much. They didn’t search every learner.

He added: “We also did awareness about the exploitation of shop owners. Criminals target these shops and ask a certain fee for protection money. We also did awareness about that and said that they shouldn’t pay the money”.
