His 12th title, a monumental, unprecedented one, is just as special as his first, says canoeing legend Hank McGregor.
The Durbanite won the last leg of the Berg River Canoe Marathon on Saturday on a cold and wet West Coast and took his 12th title.
He covered the 60 km between Soutkloof and Velddrif in four hours, 42 minutes and 45 seconds.
Jenna Nisbet won her first title after dominating the women’s race.
McGregor’s 12 titles are a new record. He started the last day with a slim lead of 90 seconds over the u-23 rower Uli Hart.
He won the last time bonus at the Bokkom Bungalows and then led a fast leading group to the finish line in Velddrif.
His overall winning time was 18:41:05.
Robbie Herreveld, a six-time champion, withdrew early in the final shift due to hypothermia.
Nisbet had a tough final day, but was able to hold on to win in 5:13:48 and hold back Nikki Birkett, her closest opponent.
Nisbet was 16th overall – a first for a female rower – Birkett was second overall and Melanie van Niekerk third.
