Three people were murdered in Mbekweni this past week, including a 35-year-old man over the weekend, followed by another man’s death as reported by Paarl Hospital and a 41- year-old man was shot dead on Tuesday.

The most recent incident was a shooting that happened on Tuesday (1 March) at the corner of Mthubi and Jantjies streets. Mbekweni police spokesperson WO Nceba Vanqa said police received a call reporting the incident and on their arrival at the scene they found the victim killed with multiple gunshots to the head, face and upper body.

“12 projectiles were found next to the body. According to witnesses, a black SUV was seen leaving with unknown occupants but the registration of the vehicle is also unknown.

“The victim was identified as Lifa Mahloko (41) of R-Block in Mbekweni. A murder case is being investigated.”

Vanqa also reported the murder of Mphumzi Msuthu (35) who was stabbed to death on Saturday morning at about 06:30 at Langabuya Informal Settlement.

“According to bystanders he had a fight with the suspect and was stabbed in his left (disabled) leg. He ran to his friend’s shack and collapsed in front of the door. The ambulance was called but he was certified dead on the scene.”

A murder case docket was registered, followed by the 36-year-old suspect who handed himself over to the police. He appeared at Paarl Magistrates’ Court on Monday (28 February).

“On Sunday (27 February) at 12:30 police were called by Paarl Hospital informing them about a man who was brought by an ambulance the previous night. The patient was still alive at the time.” Vanqa described that the victim had multiple wounds over his body.

“It is alleged that he was assaulted by community members, and eventually died due to his injuries. He was identified as Fezile Mcunukelwa from Nederpark Informal Settlement in Drommedaris Street.” A murder case docket was registered, of which the suspects are unknown.
