The Western Cape National Senior Certificate (NSC) awards took place on Tuesday morning at Leeuwenhof in Cape Town. Premier Alan Winde and MEC David Maynier were both in attendance.

Schools and learners who excelled at the end of last year’s matric exams were awarded for their excellent academic achievements.

Desmond Mpilo Tutu Secondary School was among the top 10 most improved public schools. The category looked at ten public schools with 30 or more candidates that have shown the greatest improvement in pass rate over the period 2021 to 2023. The criteria also include consistency in the number of Grade 12 candidates over the three year period from 2021 to 2023.

Labori High School was recognised as part of the top three best technical schools in the province.

Furthermore Hoër Landbouskool Boland, La Rochelle Girls’ High School, and Paarl Girls’ High School were part of the public schools awarded for their consistent pass rates of 95% and more over five years.

Local schools also made the list of the Top 20 schools in the province with an NSC enrolment of 80 or more candidates (including independent schools) that have achieved excellence in academic results in 2023. These schools are Paarl Gimnasium High School, La Rochelle Girls’ High School and Paarl Girls’ High School.

Awards to candidates were also presented for the best performance in specified subjects. Iris Saunders from La Rochelle Girls’ High and Migael Andreas Scheepers from Labori High School were among 16 candidates who obtained full marks for a subject. For Iris it was Computer Applications Technology (CAT) and for Migael it was Electrical Technology (Power Systems).

Willem Adriaan de Villiers from Paarl Boys’ High, Annemay Schade and Milcah Visser, both from Paarl Girls’ High School, are part of the top 40 candidates in the province according to the marks obtained in their best six subjects that fulfil the requirements for the award of a National Senior Certificate (two Languages, Mathematics and three other subjects excluding Life Orientation).
