The Cape Winelands Cycling group launched a manhunt today (Thursday) in tracking down a motorcyclist who allegedly hit a cyclist-in-training on the R301 in Paarl on Wednesday.
The non-fatal accident was reported after 14:00 near the Drakenstein Correctional Centre on the thoroughfare en route to Franschhoek. It is alleged the motorcyclist fled the scene before authorities had a chance to interview all those involved in the accident.
The young cyclist who was preparing for a race was conscious at the scene.
“An ER24 crew did respond to the accident,” private paramedic Kurt Maske informed Paarl Post. “Although injured, the patient was stable at the scene.”
Cape Winelands Cycling had the following post on its Facebook page: “Looking for anyone who saw what happened when motorcycle hit cyclist out training and drove off yesterday afternoon… [The] cyclist [is] in hospital with serious injuries, one being a broken neck.”
However, the exact extent of the victim’s injuries had not yet been confirmed by police or official hospital channels at the time of publishing.
The group post also thanked those who stopped to help the young cyclist on the R301.
Further media inquiries to Paarl police spokesperson Captain Louise du Plessis and the Cape Winelands Cycling group also were not yet replied to.
Official police confirmation will be updated in this developing news story.
