A man from Paarl was badly beaten with his own garden spade in an attack in his house on a local wine farm this week.

According to reports Russel Heyes, had been living in a cottage on Avondale Farm in Lustigan Road for eight years.

On going out to check whether his gate was closed, about 01:00 on Monday, someone hit him over the head with his garden spade.

Heyes was struck numerous times, but managed to fight his attacker off and grab hold of the spade.

The suspect then ran away.

He immediately raised the alarm and Daan van Leeuwen Boomkamp, ??head of Drakenstein Farm Watch, said his members were on the scene in a flash and called for assistance from Fidelity ADT. The police also arrived.

Heyes was taken to Paarl Hospital and received stitches to his head. “I (also) have a lot of scratches everywhere,” he said.

A case of attempted murder was registered, but Paarl police did not respond to further enquiries about the incident.
