Residents of Paarl were very surprised this past weekend to see exciting action in the Paarl CBD when the “army” came to town. And no, it was not due to another crime scene in the town centre, but rather an international documentary about the life of Dag Hammarskjöld, a Swedish economist and diplomat who served as the second Secretary General of the United Nations from 1953 until his death in a plane crash while on a diplomatic mission in September 1961. Old vehicles and even army tanks drove into Paarl and parts of Main Road and Lady Grey Street were transformed into “dirt roads” for the filming of this documentary, including “United Nations soldiers” patrolling the streets. The central hub of Paarl was particularly chosen for this shoot by movie scouts, due to the rich art deco architecture which portrays life in the ’60s.Photo: Lise Beyers
