Recently 20 school learners of various ages, some from far afield as Darling and Paarl, came together at Salem Biblical Garden in Agter-Paarl.

One of their main objectives was to delve into the past, learn about archaeology and ancient cultures by visiting the open-air biblical archaeology museum.

Surrounded by fynbos and the great outdoors, they saw a short introductory film on the sciences of archaeology and paleontology at the media centre, “Journeyed through the Bible” on a guided tour in the Biblical Art Garden. They then visited the Archaeological Museum (under construction) being expanded by the curator of the museum, archaeologist Pastor Michael John Walmsley, who started it in 2017.

Biblical archaeology educates people on the history and culture of ancient times. It exhibits some of the exciting discoveries, validating events mentioned in the Bible.

New displays are being put in place to exhibit replicas of artifacts from 2400 BC to the Roman era in Israel. These include pottery vessels, amphora, seal impressions and beehives.

Before enjoying refreshments in the picnic area the group undertook a brisk hike on St Paul’s 2 km picturesque mountain trail, over the granite rocks into the pine forest around the art garden.
