On a weekend drive in Du Toits kloof Pass on Saturday (4 March) the owner of a hijacked vehicle was met with pure luck when he discovered a similar-looking vehicle was actually his!

This according to Paarl police spokesperson Captain Louise du Plessis, who confirmed the owner of a vehicle hijacked in Philippi in January was reunited with his stolen property.

“A traffic officer who was busy assisting with a bicycle race in the pass was approached by the complainant in the hijacking case.

“He told the officer he was sure the vehicle standing at a swimming spot on the pass, known as ‘Lekker water’, was his.”

On investigation the traffic officer found the vehicle was indeed the complainant’s hijacked vehicle.

The person in the driver’s seat, Sivyile Mbinoini, was soon arrested for being in possession of a stolen vehicle.

Du Plessis said he appeared in the Paarl Magistrates’ Court on 6 March and received bail of R2 000.

Mbinoini is due to appear again on 22 March.
