A 13-year-old Paarl learner is set to take his rugby dreams to the international stage after being selected to tour Ireland later this year.
Chaz Lukes, a Grade 7 learner at New Orleans Primary School, recently represented the Paarl XV Rugby Team at the Kobus Wiese Super Series 2026, where he stood out among top young players.
According to mom Dawn Ontong his performance at the tournament earned him significant recognition.
“His exceptional talent has been recognised among many skilled players. Chaz was named Player of the Match and has been selected to represent the BRSI Bulldogs Rugby Team, touring and competing in Ireland during December 2026.”
A total of 85 teams participated in the tournament with Chaz earning a place in the prestigious Kobus Wiese tournament team.
His achievements build on earlier successes, having been named Rugby Player of the Year at his school in 2025.
“With the right opportunities and continued support he has the potential to progress through higher levels of the sport and represent his team with pride,” Ontong added. “Chaz aspires to play rugby both locally and internationally, with the ultimate goal of one day representing the Springboks.”
The upcoming Ireland tour, however, comes at a cost, and the family has launched a fundraising drive to make the opportunity possible.
“To make this dream tour a reality we are raising funds to cover Chaz’s tour cost,” his mother said, “which includes his travel, accommodation, meals, team kits, transport to matches and training. Additionally, we also need to cover the cost of his visa, passport and spending money.”
She appealed to the community for support as they were trying to raise R70 000.
“Every contribution, big or small, will help Chaz take the next big step in his rugby journey. This is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity and cannot be missed.
