A Franschhoek contractor and his wife were held at gunpoint in their house in the Mooiwater area last Friday (25 February) and were robbed of a large amount of cash.

According to Franschhoek police spokesperson Sgt Marize Mentoor, the contractor was in his bedroom preparing weekly salaries of his workers at about 12:30.

His wife who witnessed the incident was sitting outside in the yard of their house near to the gate.

“His wife was suddenly attacked by three men wearing balaclavas and dragged into the house,” she said.

“In the kitchen one of the robbers threatened her with a firearm, while the other two suspects, who were also armed, went looking for her husband.

“The contractor’s wife was held down in a chair by one suspect and the other two found and apprehended the contractor in the bedroom.

They took all the cash and put it into a backpack and fled the house on foot.”

No-one was injured in the incident. Mentoor added that on investigation bystanders said they had noticed a white Ford Figo or Fiesta with a CF registration number that was parked in a nearby street close to the crime scene earlier on.

“The vehicle was driven by a female and the rear back side window was covered with a blue plastic bag,” she said. “The suspects may have fled with the cash in this vehicle.”
