Flooding: Load-shedding suspended, Drakenstein ‘remains on high alert’

Eskom on Monday announced the suspension of load-shedding for parts of the Western and Eastern Cape amid widespread damage to electricity infrastructure caused by heavy rainfall in several coastal areas since Sunday.

The power utility says it wants to ensure that technical teams restore the supply of electricity safely.

The remaining provinces will stay on stage 3 load-shedding until further notice.

In the Drakenstein Municipality several roads in Paarl remain closed due to flooding. Motorists have been advised to avoid areas around the Long Street Bridge due to the heavy flow of the Berg River.

A number of roads close to the Berg River in the north of Paarl have flooded and remains closed.

Flooding has also been reported in Klapmuts and several parts of Franschhoek.

The Franschhoek Pass has been closed since early Monday morning due to flood damage.

The Drakenstein Municipality has called on residents to remain cautious and stay clear of riverbanks.

“Drakenstein Municipality assures our residents that we are working around the clock to keep services up and running and ensure the safety of everyone in the current severe weather conditions,” it said in a statement.

It says teams are working around the clock to restore various power outages.

“We are also monitoring our substations, and our teams are on standby to take steps to switch off substations if absolutely necessary.”

The municipality says the spillway gate at the Wemmershoek Dam, which is managed by the Department of Water and Sanitation and the City of Cape, is currently opened at stage 5.

The Overberg region, which includes areas such as Caledon, Grabouw, Botrivier and Villiersdorp, have been in the eye of the storm where significant damage to roads and essential infrastructure occurred since the early hours of Monday morning.

The N2 highway between Botrivier and Caledon remains closed after the Swart River bridge was swept away.

Road closures are also in place at the Peregrine Farm Stall near Grabouw due to trees that have fallen on the highway.

The R43 between Standford and Hermanus is also closed due to flooding as well as the the R320 Hemel and Aarde between Caledon and Hermanus.

Paarl Post understands that at least three people have been reported missing in the Theewaterskloof Municipality. In Villiersdorp rescue teams are searching for two people and in Botrivier one person is also missing and presumed to have swept away by raging waters.

Over 170 mm of rainfall has been recorded in the Overberg since Sunday, the Western Cape Disaster Management Centre said during a media briefing on Monday.

Stellenbosch recorded over 130 mm in the same period.

The South African Weather Service says the current inclement weather conditions is expected to last for the rest of Monday, especially in areas along the Garden Route.
