The first programme of the Cape Chamber Music Collective 2023 season will feature the much loved Quintet for Clarinet and String Quartet in B minor Op. 115 by Brahms.

The Brahms will be preceded by the Shostakovich String Quartet no. 7 in F-sharp minor Op. 108.

Brahms’ Clarinet Quintet is undoubtedly one of the greatest chamber music masterpieces.

The quintet is a late work, having been composed in 1891 when Brahms was at the height of his creative powers. The four-movement work features some of the most exquisite musical lines and colours of any chamber work.

Shostakovich dedicated his 7th String Quartet to his late wife Nina. The quartet was composed in 1960 to celebrate what would have been Nina’s 50th birthday.

The work comprises three movements with a cyclic design where the final movement returns to the themes of the first movement, essentially ending where it started.

In between lies a musical journey that is unmistakably pure Shostakovich.

The programme will be performed by a stellar ensemble of both seasoned performers and young students. The string quartet comprises the violinists Valentina Vorster and Annien Shaw, violist Uliana Alekseev, and cellist Nicola McLachlan.

The Cape Chamber Music Collective is a unique and innovative initiative with the aim of bringing high-class chamber music to established audiences and also to introduce classical music to new audiences.

The programme will be presented at various venues in and around Cape Town.

On Friday 17 February the Cape Chamber Music Collective will perform at 19:30 at the Endler Hall in Stellenbosch. Tickets at R150 per person, R110 (pensioners 60 years and older) and R50 (students and learners) are available through Webtickets and at the door one hour before the concert.
