On Saturday 30 April the Fair Trade City of Drakenstein plans to celebrate World Fair Trade Day 2022 in collaboration with the World Fair Trade Organisation Africa and Middle East at the Paarl Arboretum.

While the day is set to promote and highlight the positive impact that fair trade has on economies, it also aims to create an opportunity for local businesses to market and network with like-minded organisations.

In this context the day will focus on disseminating information on fair trade, and on promoting the culture of sustainability and an understanding of the value of buying fair, local and sustainably produced goods. It also marks one year since the launch of the Fair Trade City of Drakenstein campaign.

The event starts at 09:00 and runs until 17:00. It is free to all those attending and exhibiters. Those wishing to attend can access the event from the Arboretum, the bridge entrance and the main entrance from Market Street. There will be a check-in point at the entrances for event- goers. Activities on the day will focus on the promotion of local, fair, ethical and sustainable businesses, where marketers and buyers can network while families enjoy a fun outdoor experience with local artists and food.

Families can enjoy food and drinks from the stalls. Kids will have access to a designated play area with a jumping castle, jungle gym, puppet show and face painting. There will be qualified childminders in the kids’ area for safety purposes. Kids will enjoy a 15-minute climate justice themed puppet show at 11:30 and 14:15.

There will be live entertainment by three local artists and a DJ. The event organiser is providing a shade tent, umbrellas, tables and chairs for event goers. However, families can bring picnic blankets on the day. Event-goers are encouraged to bring Drakenstein beverages as the event is promoting local suppliers.

All Covid-19 protocols will be observed and in place on the day of the event.
