The past two months have placed South Africans in unity overdrive, thanks to a magnificent performance from the Springbok rugby team during the Rugby World Cup (RWC) in France.

The country has been in an absolute slump these past few years due to a collapsed economy, what with an ever-growing cost of living, load shedding, sky-high crime statistics and a corrupt government that is not serving its people, to mention a few of the nightmares people in South Africa face daily.

But the RWC for a brief moment set these issues aside, and almost the entire nation joined forces and put their full support behind the Boks.

And on Saturday evening the country erupted in victory for all when the much-loved Bok captain Siya Kolisi lifted the Webb Ellis trophy aloft after beating New Zealand in the final.

However, what followed was a bitter pill for many to swallow in the aftermath of such unbridled joy. And this was the President of South Africa, Cyril Ramaphosa, making a mockery of this triumph by using it as a stage for political gain.

He literally grabbed the trophy from Kolisi’s hands and held it aloft as if it was his own! This World Cup victory was a victory for all South Africans, and not just a political one.
