A 22-year-old, Gladys Davids from Paarl East, was arrested for stealing copper cables from business premises in Jan van Riebeeck Road early on Thursday morning (24th April).
“While Paarl police officers patrolled the area they noticed suspicious-looking behaviour by a woman next to the road. The officers caught the suspect while busy cutting the cables,” said police spokesperson, Capt Louise du Plessis.
The woman appeared in the Paarl Magistrates’ Court on Monday and has been remanded into custody until 4 May.
Two other suspects were also nabbed in related incidents.
“More patrols in other spots in the area focused on a specific area where trenches were dug earlier.”
Their suspicions proved right and they successfully arrested two suspects on Friday around 04:50.
“The suspects, Siymanthanda Dyabuza (27) and Vivo Ntamo (26), from Mbekweni, were arrested for cable theft and appeared in Paarl Magistrates’ Court on Monday.
“They have been remanded into custody until 3 May.”
Du Plessis said cable and copper theft remained a problem in the Paarl area.
“Although arrests are being made thanks to effective policing in the area, the trend continues in all areas of Paarl. Businesses, both farm and industrial, can assist in curbing the spike in thefts.”
She said people must ensure alarms are placed in strategic areas, electrical/air conditioning units are secure and be prepared with security measures.
