“Keep quiet! You are being robbed,” a band of hijackers told the driver of a Clover truck on Friday afternoon (18 February) after they stopped at a shop in Dontsa Street, Wellington.
A case of truck jacking has been opened following the incident in which a Clover truck driver and his co-driver were busy doing deliveries at the Mayekiso Store, said Station Commander of Wellington police, Col Johan Barkhuizen.
“The driver said that it looked like the suspect had a firearm underneath his shirt. Once he was paid by the shop owner, he walked back to the truck with the suspect.”
A second suspect joined and forced himself into the back of the truck along with the driver in which they were again told to keep quiet.
A third suspect was keeping a look-out outside.
“They took the money paid by the shop owner, locked the workers in the back of the truck and drove to an unknown location in Newrest or in the vicinity where they drilled a hole in the safe and took the cash.
“They also took the workers’ cellphones, opened the back of the truck before taking yoghurts, a score of drinks while handing some of it to people passing by. They told the workers to stay inside,” Barkhuizen reported.
Once the drivers realised it was quiet, they got out and drove to Mbekweni police.
A large sum of money and some products were stolen. No weapons were physically seen or drawn during the incident. No arrests were made and the three suspects remain at large.
