A prosecuter at the Stellenbosch Magistrate’s Court was released on R1 000 bail after being charged with assaulting his ex-girlfriend, while an alleged thief, Morné du Plessis, was remanded into custody until 23 June.

The 42-year-old Frederick Smit was arrested at his house in Paarl following an alleged assault of his estranged girlfriend last Tuesday afternoon.

Paarl police spokesperson Capt Louise du Plessis said the prosecutor’s victim managed to flee to the neighbours for help. “The suspect is to reappear in the Paarl Magistrates’ Court on 6 July on various charges relating to the Domestic Violence Act.”

On Monday, the Paarl Magistrates’ Court saw the appearance of the 41-year-old Morné du Plessis for two counts of theft from a motor vehicle and possession of stolen property.

“[On Friday] a local security company found the suspect in possession of various items in a backpack, which he couldn’t account for.”

Capt Du Plessis added that while investigations continued following his arrest two complainants residing in the same street arrived at the police station to lay of charge of theft from a motor vehicle.

“They were able to point the stolen property out as items stolen out of their vehicles, linking the suspect to the separate incidents.

The suspect has been remanded into custody until 23 June.”
