Nicole Stott, a retired Nasa astronaut and author, recently visited Paarl Girls’ High School, where she addressed learners from a few schools in Paarl, including New Orleans Secondary and Labori High School. During her visit Stott said: “Having lived and worked on the International Space Station, I can say that everything we’re doing there, really, is ultimately about improving life on earth. I want people to know that. I want them to understand what we’re doing in space and how it benefits us here on earth. I think the best way to do that is through students who are starting to consider what they want to do in life. They are exploring what kind of impact they could have and the kind of jobs we have the opportunity to pursue, such as science, technology, engineering and maths, as well as the arts, which can really help us solve the most challenging problems of the world.”Photo: Chantélle Hartebeest
