The Cape Peninsula University of Technology (CPUT) campus in Wellington was still licking its wounds after last year’s destructive student protests when protests this week erupted again.

And unfortunately, once again it seems as if it’s just a handful of students who decided to go this violent route.

Again, thousands of rands’ damage has already been caused to campus property, not to mention the disruption of educational classes.

It is every citizen’s democratic right to protest against unjust actions against them, but then those claims must be completely valid and not purely fuelled by emotion.

The latest CPUT Wellington-campus protest is, again, by a handful of students who haven’t been able to state their case completely.

Most students here are just trying to go from day to day focusing on their studies, while also enjoying student life.

But these “protesters” are putting a damper on this.

These are also the students who continuously pull out the race card with self-righteous abandon and with a hand-out mentality, often bullying their fellow students.

They should rather focus on their studies to create a better life for themselves.

So one cannot help but wonder whether this is really politically fuelled.
