The Western Cape Education Department (WCED) has pleaded with parents to finish their 2022 school admission process, as the department extended the applications deadline until today 1 April.
“There will be no further extensions beyond this point. Parents will then have had 35 days to apply. We believe that come 1 April, parents have been given ample time to get the necessary documents together and to complete their applications,” says Bronagh Hammond, spokesperson for the WCED.
If there are parents who do not have internet access to apply online, they are able to apply through a paper-based application process. In this case parents must ask the relevant school for the application form.
It is also important to remember to apply to at least three schools, including the ones closest to home.
Hammond emphasized, “Every year we have parents who apply late. While we are committed to place their children, by applying late, they are putting their child’s education at a disadvantage as their child could potentially be at home for weeks, while we find a place for them”.
She added that it is important for the WCED to know exactly where the demand is for the next school year, which is why they have started the application process in this year.
“This allows us to plan more affectively – for example, where we should place additional mobiles.“If there is an unexpected increase within a certain community, then it could take weeks before we secure additional mobiles, teachers or a place for the children at certain schools, pending on the situation. It is in everyone’s interest to apply on time.”
The following documents are required as part of the application and registering process:
• The last official school report card;
• Proof of address;
• Identity document, birth certificate, passport of the learner or;
• A study permit for foreign learners or proof of study permit application or a police affidavit;
• Primary school applications requires the immunisation card (Road to Health Chart) of the child.
