A 35-year-old man was arrested and charged with culpable homicide after knocking down and killing a young boy on Saturday (19 February) and fleeing the scene in his vehicle.

Paarl police spokesperson Capt Louise du Plessis said the incident took place around 20:00. “Eyewitnesses said the 11-year-old, from a farm in the Main Road, Paarl, was sitting on a barrier when struck by the vehicle,” she said. “He was declared dead on the scene.”

Du Plessis explained the driver of the vehicle fled the scene, after which further investigations led officers to trace the vehicle.

“The suspect, Ludwig Britz, was successfully located at his residence, followed by his arrest. He appeared in the Paarl Magistrates’ Court on 21 February and was released on R1 500 bail. He will reappear on 21 April.”
