Paarl Boys’ Primary School has once again shown it is a leader in all things sporty. It now offers mountain biking as part of its sports curriculum. This move now places MTB in the same bracket as rugby and hockey at schools.

For the past three years, Klein Boishaai has offered mountain biking as an auxiliary sport.

It developed spontaneously in 2019, when nine learners competed against Grey College Bloemfontein and its popularity has grown so that 75 boys recently showed up at the schools Mountain Bike Open Day.

During 2019 Klein Boishaai, for the first time, participated in the Spur Schools Mountain Bike Competition and finished third overall at the end of the series.

Due to Covid-19 in 2020, this MTB team of enthusiastic boys had only a few training sessions and unfortunately could not participate in any competitions.

Last year the sport slowly started gaining momentum again with the boys training once a week and taking part in only two races, due to the Covid-19 circumstances.

And this year due to the enthusiasm of both boys and parents, the school decided to give the sport an official place on the sports programme during the winter season.

The mountain-bike boys are now very excited to be able to train twice a week and are looking forward to some exciting dates on the race calendar.

And to further assist Klein Boishaai in this endeavour is Andrew le Cordeur’s flow park situated behind Frater Square in Paarl.

When Andrew set up his Power Mill gymnasium in an adjacent building at Frater Square, he saw the potential of a family-orientated flow track on the Fraters farm

A Mountain Bike and run flow park now offers a 3,2 km track with 160 m of elevation and boasting 13 bridges. It is an ultimate trail and cross country skills course, providing a safe central community training hub.

A bonus to the flow track is that it is surrounded by a restaurant and coffee shop were parents can relax while their children train on the track.

Also on offer at Andrews Power Mill is? a virtual studio, that combines a passion for cycling with state of the art technology, in a safe, ride anytime, any weather facility, using Zwift as the platform of choice.

Here cyclists can cycle any race right around the world virtually and race against real competitors, also from around the world.

Also a first for Paarl is the Power Mills high intensity Aqua Box n Burn, and professional boxing and sparring classes.
