Last week the Western Cape Health Department welcomed the repeal of the Covid-19 regulations and at the same time encouraged the voluntary wearing of masks.
Dr Saadiq Kariem, Head of Operations, Western Cape Government Health, said they encourage voluntary mask wearing where applicable.
Kariem said this would be for people who have flu symptoms, people who have underlying chronic conditions and the elderly.
The department in a media release said they urge residents to be mindful of the vulnerable individuals that may be around them and they encourage ongoing good ventilation and other good habits.
The department said masks have proven to be a protective measure against airborne diseases and have become part of everyday actions in several countries.
They say residents can continue with this protective behaviour voluntarily when in crowds and places where there is poor ventilation.
Another simple action to navigate around airborne diseases is to ensure residents open their windows and let lots of fresh air in.
“We know that covid is not gone, but we are learning to live with it and vaccination is one of those ways we can live with covid safely,” Kariem said.
“We therefore implore everyone 12 years and older to get their vaccinations up to date including their boosters.”
