The murder trial of Australian Bruce Thompson has once again been postponed, nine years after he was charged with murder.

He appeared in Paarl Regional Court again on Monday 4 July on a charge of murdering his wife Magret Kendle, a British citizen.

She was found dead in the couple’s Wellington home.

Thompson himself called the police and claimed his wife had committed suicide by taking an overdose of sleeping pills.

According to police, sleeping pills were indeed found on a table beside her bed.

But following an autopsy on her body the state pathologist said no trace of sleeping pills was found in her blood. It was, however, found that her neck and vertebrae had been badly damaged or bruised.

Thompson’s house was then further scoured by police during which blood spatters were discovered, which were found to be Kendle’s.

Thompson was arrested a few days later and released on only R10 000 bail following a long application.

The case was postponed for a multitude of reasons and later transferred to Paarl Regional Court.

Thompson, who remains out on bail, is due to appear in court again on 29 August.
