Is there a future for De Poort?

After years of uncertainty and lack of direction, there may be light at the end of the tunnel in the near future for Paarls’ white elephant, De Poort Historical Village.

Situated on almost 4 000m² prime property in Southern Paarl, was a fruitless effort to develop an interactive heritage facility and wagon museum at the “gateway” to Paarl.

The development never really took off due to lack of financial reserves and collaboration between the De Poort board of directors and the Drakenstein Municipality.

The municipality this week may have shed some light on the future of the De Poort property with a public call for submissions of development proposals for the development and long-term lease of the property.

The property is zoned for mixed-use development in accordance with the municipality’s Hamlet Design Framework and De Poort Business Model.

The proposed lease period to the successful candidate is 50 years, with an option afterwards to renew for a further 10-year period.

All interested parties must note they must attend a compulsory information session to be held on 28 July from 10:00 to 11:00 at De Poort. Applications will be considered only from those present at the information session.
