I drive daily on the Boulevard in Paarl in a northerly direction during rush hour in the morning, and then again in the afternoon, and it is a frightening experience, one that is getting worse.
From the Market Street circle, minibus taxis from all directions drive as if they are taking part in a Grand Prix.
And then at the Lady Grey Street crossing it gets worse. Taxis just ignore every traffic regulation, driving right through red traffic lights, cutting in from the left in front of vehicles in the right-hand lane, waiting to turn into Lady Grey Street.
It is absolute mayhem, and the worrisome aspect of it all is that I never see a single traffic officer on duty there to curb all this lawlessness.
If anything, this serves as proof that the municipality has no wish to focus on law enforcement on our roads at all.
But they are quick to set up traffic barricades on the boulevard to pull road users over just to give them a printed copy of whatever fines they may still have outstanding.
