As 16 days of activism start this week, one wonders why it is actually necessary for such initiatives.
It is sad that we live in a world where the majority of awareness campaigns are focussed on people to be, and act as normal decent human beings.
We pride ourself on being evolutionary beings, being content in our technological advancement and usually linking cognative advancement to this attainment. But how can we pride ourself in being evolved human beings if we can’t even protect the ones close to us?
Our women and children always suffer on the back burner and they have to fight, not only for their rights, but just to be protected in a society where they are constantly victimised, killed, raped and underestimated.
We are all living under false pretences if we believe we made any progress. Yes, we have more women coming forward to report heinous crimes committed against them, but what initiative actually focuses on stunting the harm caused against them?
We can march, we can pray and we can protest all we want, because the fact of the matter is, while we take an hour out of our day to wear a black T-shirt, creating awareness in the streets, a few dozen women would have been killed and raped by the time that shirt goes into the washing.
We all need to do more. We need to do better. We need to do it now.
