The 33rd anniversary of late former President Nelson Mandela’s historic release from Victor Verster Prison (now the Drakenstein Correctional Centre), from where he walked to Freedom after 27 years of incarceration, falls on 11 February.
To commemorate it, the prison will host the 11th 27 for Freedom Race at the correctional facility outside Paarl on the R301.
For the serious runner there is the scenic, revised 27 km run/walk (symbolic of the number of years spent behind bars by the former president) or the 10 km run/walk or the Freedom Route (5 km).
This special day promises to be a family fun day of sports, history and entertainment.
You will walk/run along the same route taken by Madiba as he left prison, from the Madiba House, down the Long Walk to Freedom, to the Madiba statue at the entrance to the prison.
This year, 2023, marks the 10th anniversary of the death of Madiba, one of the world’s most abiding symbols of the international struggle for human rights.
Last-minute entries are still accepted intil 5 February and can be done at topevents.co.za
Five Paarl Post runners can each win a free entry to the 27 for Freedom race.
To stand a chance to win an entry simply email Paarl Post and your cellphone number to Nuha de Roos at nuha@topevents.co.za by Sunday day 5 February.
