It was a case of love and murder at the KWV last week, with a culinary delight served up by Chef Mynhardt Joubert.
For Cathedral Cellar’s consumers this is the perfect time to slow down to the pace of the winemaking journey by embracing the “stillness” of the winter season with a book – and now a series streaming on Showmax – which has cast a captivating spell on food and wine circles; Recipes for Love and Murder by South African writer Sally Andrew.
This mesmerising murder mystery series combines delectable recipes with a thrilling narrative, as the protagonist, Tannie Maria, a South African amateur detective, uncovers dark secrets while exploring her culinary heritage.
Cathedral Cellar wines’ own Ambassador Chef, Mynhardt Joubert, played a pivotal role in making the story of Tannie Maria come to life; as head food stylist on set while filming in Prince Albert in 2021 he had to ensure each recipe and dish on screen would do Tannie Maria’s deft cooking justice, even though these were not exactly inspired as in the book.
Despite unique challenges, such as seasonal ingredient availability during filming, Joubert’s culinary expertise allowed him to adapt the recipes while maintaining the essence and flavours that captivated readers of the book.
With first-hand insight into the recipes, he has added his own unique twist to some of Tannie Maria’s dishes, and he is encouraging fans of hers to do the same.
“These recipes are hearty and traditional, and are perfect food partners to Cathedral Cellar’s line-up of delicious wines,” Joubert declares.
Says author Sally Andrew: “I am delighted Tannie Maria is walking across the veld and across the globe in her red vellies – into people’s homes and kitchens. I am grateful to Both World producers, Chef Mynhardt, and all the people who have enriched and widened Tannie Maria’s world.
“As an author it is a joy to offer some delicious ingredients that others can change and add to, creating something new, unique and fresh, while retaining some of the core flavours.”
Joubert further said that he was over the moon to have been involved in this most remarkable production!
“I headed up the food styling team for Recipes For Love and Murder and was responsible for interpreting and styling Tannie Maria’s Karoo food with an amazing team by my side.”
Now streaming on Showmax online, it’s a heartwarming, scary, thrilling and beautiful production! Thank you @christiaanolwagen for giving us this opportunity. @foodiesofsa @foodstylist_cpt and @rijkemarci91 you were rockstars. #recipesforloveandmurder
Some of the recipes we use in the show come from Andrew’s books and other recipes were developed by the team led by Joubert, who lives in Paarl. He was testing recipes and one is released weekly, after the show.”
