This week numerous local individuals and businesses reached out to the less fortunate.

Yes, Mandela Day received much attention, and do-gooders were out in full force feeding and doing their best to help those less fortunate.

But is this mass charitable hysteria necessary only one day of the year?

For many it has become a public-relations exercise.

Still, it is good to see the community working together to alleviate the miserable burden with which so many live. So why stop there?

One can only hope those who have any goodwill in them will rather spread out their charitable efforts throughout the year, perhaps making every day a Mandela Day.

Adopt a granny, feed the hungry, pass on your unwanted goods to those in need. Give a can of pet food to your local SPCA or even just smile and greet your fellow-man when walking in the street.

The list is endless and these small gestures can surely be done more regularly, to make a difference in the lives of those in need around us.
