Presently across Drakenstein there is great excitement among both scholars and adults, who proudly display the colours of their various alma maters.

The first of many sport derbies has already got under way, with Charleston Hill Secondary and Wellington High tackling each other on the rugby field in their derby match on Saturday.

Paarl is also in the midst of Interschools 2023 fever. There is great expectation for what many reckon will be a legendary clash between the first rugby teams of Paarl Boys’ High and Paarl Gimnasium next weekend.

Derby time highlights the rich history and tradition we have on the school front. And our healthy competitive spirit in sport at school level is known across the country. During these battles our town comes alive with festivity, bursting at the seams with all its visitors.

It’s not only a time for sport, though. It is when old school friends come together, many not having seen each other for years. But it is also a time when every pupil and ex-pupil can take great pride in having been educated in this part of the world.

We should cherish this tradition and do our utmost to ensure it goes from strength to strength each year. May these clashes continue without any incident to enshrine camaraderie and sportsmanship.
