“Give a man a fish and you feed him for a day, teach him how to fish and you feed him for a lifetime.”
This is the founding principle of Work For A Living (W4AL) Paarl which will open its doors on 15 January in Klein Parys. The facilitator, Russel JW van Sitters, says the centre aims to equip people with the skills and knowledge to not only find a job but to keep one too.
Its main endeavour though is to break the poverty cycle and address the hopelessness that enslaves so many unemployed people in South Africa.
Our country struggles with widespread unemployment. Currently over 30% of our population is unemployed, which has exacerbated crime and poverty in many local communities.
W4AL is a non-profit organisation and a Christ Church Paarl ministry with a vision to alleviate poverty and unemployment. The programme offers foundational training for professional environments and entrepreneurship. Two central courses offered are the Job Readiness Course and Wired 4 Business, after which upskilling courses in various fields can be accessed. These include barista training, office administration and many more. These upskilling courses enable job seekers to add skills to their CV’s, making them more attractive to potential employers, and thus helps them get hired faster.
W4AL courses are designed to help you discover and enhance your natural strengths to prepare you for the workplace. The organisation aims to champion character and competence while teaching practical skills. In their opinion, personal development and character are crucial in securing long-term employment. As evidence of this, W4AL reports an 80% placement of its graduates in paid positions!
Russel says: “With our present unemployment rate in the Drakenstein area, I would like to encourage businesses to open their doors to W4AL graduates. Our graduates will have demonstrated their commitment to excellence and integrity throughout our programme, ensuring high quality job applicants.”
