The Easter weekend had not even begun when two people were already killed in a motor-vehicle crash near Boschenmeer in Paarl on Sunday evening.

For most of us the Easter long weekend is a well-deserved break after the first few hectic months of the year.

But to many it is also a time of anguish and mourning as the carnage on our roads continues.

Although road deaths decreased last year over the Easter weekend period, they remain a problematic issue.

Two main factors that contribute towards road deaths over this period are speed and drunken driving.

Once again numerous awareness projects will remind us about road-safety measures for the Easter weekend, but unfortunately the death toll at the end of the day will tell another tale.

When it comes to road safety the bottom line is that reckless drivers far too often just get rapped over their knuckles for endangering the lives of others or, in many instances, for taking them.

Only once relevant, appropriate punishment is dealt out to those who choose to use public roads as their personal playground normality may return to our roads.

We wish all our readers a blessed and safe Easter weekend.
