The rising incidence of murders involving schoolchildren is a disturbing reminder of the deep-seated issues plaguing our society.

The murder, on school grounds, of a Caledon learner has left the entire country reeling over these past two weeks. Closer to home, another learner of Paulus Joubert High School was stabbed and killed off school grounds.

Each life lost represents not just the tragic end of a young person’s potential, but also the shattering of families and communities. Schools, once sanctuaries of learning and growth, are now marred by violence that seeps into the lives of innocent children.

The causes are multifaceted, ranging from domestic violence, gang-related activities and bullying to the easy access to weapons and pervasive culture of aggression. Society’s failure to address mental-health issues, the neglect of children’s well-being and the normalisation of violence in media also play crucial roles in this crisis.

Protecting children should be our utmost priority, yet the systems in place seem inadequate to curb this disturbing trend. It is imperative that we not only strengthen school security, but also address the root causes of this violence.

The future depends on it.
