The South African Weather Service (SAWS) has out a yellow level 4 warning for severe thunderstorms in the Cape Winelands and Overberg areas on Monday (9 February).

According to SAWS showers and thunderstorms are expected to develop over the Overberg and Cape Winelands early from Monday morning.

“Some of these may become severe leading to flooding and large amounts of small hail. Rainfall accumulations between 40-70 mm is possible. There are indications of more than 100 mm in places in the Overberg, however the uncertainty regarding amounts and placements remains high.”

The national weather service says they will continue to issue updates on the conditions on Monday. The possible impact of the severe thunderstorms, which is expected from 00:00 till 24:00 on Monday, may lead to roads and informal settlements being flooded. This includes crossing of fast flowing streams.

Other possible impacts that SAWS warns of are:

– Large amounts of small and large hail that can cause damage to vehicles and difficult driving conditions, especially with heavy downpours
– Travel disruptions caused by possible falling trees blocking major roads
– Likelihood of possible agricultural production losses
– Possible disruption to essential services
