Another burglary at a public school has been reported — this time at Klapmuts High School during the Easter weekend, with damages estimated at up to R30 000. The incident occurred during the same weekend that Hillcrest Primary and Wellington Primary in Wellington were also targeted. Additionally, Bergriver Secondary School, located in the same town, was burgled the previous weekend.
According to a trusted source the breakins are believed to be that of a sindicate. Bronagh Hammond, spokesperson of the Western Cape Education Department (WCED), stated that the burglary occured on 18 April.
“The perpetrators entered three classrooms. Stationery, sanitary products, 11 packs of air freshener, toilet paper, 20 packs of doom, a dust bin, two wheelbarrows, two spades, extension cords, power tools and eight brooms were stolen.”
The perpetrators gained entry by cutting through a fence, causing damage to three security gates and three doors in the process. “The incident at Bergriver Secondary School occured on the weekend of the 13th/14th of April,” Hammond said. “The perpetrators stole an airconditioner that was located on the outside of the wall and the etimated cost of damage/theft is R15 000.”
Both incidents have been reported to the police. “We encourage anyone with information on any of the cases to please contact the police. We also ask that communities remain vigilant at all times and report any suspicious behaviour immediately to the relevant authorities,” according to Hammond.
Sergeant Madilyn Dombas, spokesperson of the Klapmuts police, confirmed the incident and said it is being investigated.
