Tienie Malan van Lac D’Orleans, Wemmershoek, een van Paarl se bekendste boere, het gesê ‘dit hang oor ons hoofde soos ’n swaard’.
First domestic science teacher: Paarl’s first qualified domestic science teacher, Miss L.W. Goedham, of Van der Lingen Street, celebrates her 82nd birthday today. She was the first domestic science teacher at the Cape after training in Natal. She received her training from the late Rev. A.J. Hendrickse, an ex-student of the old Victoria College at Stellenbosch. At Paarl, Miss Goedham taught all standards including pupil teachers.

First fruit farm exposition: South Africa’s first fruit farming exposition, to be known as POMMEC 72, is to be held at the Cape Showgrounds, Goodwood, from November 15 to 16. Representatives of farm machinery firms will meet at the President’s lounge of the Cape Showgrounds at 5.30 p.m. on June 8 to discuss arrangements for what promises to be one of the most meaningful and lively displays of farm machinery ever held at the Cape.
Medical costs keep on rising: Medical costs rose by 13,4 per cent between January and September last year. Mr. S.W. Chater, the retiring chairman, said at the 30th annual meeting of the SA Co-operative Officials’ Society here on Tuesday. He was dealing with the society’s Medical Aid Fund. This was before the impact of devaluation on imported medicines came into force, Mr. Chater said. A further rise of at least 15 per cent could be expected in the price of chemists’ goods.
