Two patients died on the R61 between Cofimvaba and Komani when an ambulance they were transferred in collided with another government vehicle on Thursday, November 9.
Provincial health department spokesperson, Sizwe Kupelo said the ambulance had been rushing the duo from Cofimvaba Hospital to Frontier Regional Hospital.
He said,
Said Kupelo: “The accident occurred when the ambulance that was rushing the two patients, who cannot be named at this stage, collided head on with another vehicle on R61 between Cofimvaba and Komani. The other person, also a government official, who was driving a department of rural development and agrarian reform vehicle is in a critical condition.”
Both patients died on the scene, Kupelo said, and both crew members – a male and female – sustained serious injuries with jaws of life being used to free them from the wreckage.
“The department wishes to send its heartfelt condolences and wishes the injured a speedy recovery,” he said.
