Police search for suspects after five family members gunned down in Lusikisiki

Police have launched a search for unknown suspects, who allegedly opened fire and fatally wounded five family members in their homestead at Luphondo locality in Lusikisiki on Monday, March 6.

Their identities are withheld until the formal identification process is concluded.

Police spokesperson, Brigadier Tembinkosi Kinana, confirmed that police were alerted to the shooting incident, which occurred at 01:00, by community members who allegedly heard gunshots.

He said on their arrival at the scene; they found five family members – aged between nine and 78 – who had suffered multiple gunshot wounds.

“They were declared dead at the crime scene. Two children aged one and eight escaped unharmed. The motive for the attack is unknown at this stage,” said Kinana, adding that police have registered five cases of murder for investigation.

The 72-hour activation plan has been ordered by the Acting Provincial Commissioner, Major General Zithulele Dladla, for the immediate mobilisation of all resources to ensure a speedy arrest of the suspects responsible for the mass shooting and killing of the family.

“Anyone with information that can lead to the arrest of the suspect (s) is requested contact the nearest police station. Information may also be shared via Crime Stop on 08600 10111. All information will be treated confidential, and callers may remain anonymous.”
