Eastern Cape police have opened a cash-in-transit, murder and two attempted murder cases following a cash-in-transit robbery where one person died and a G4S security guard was injured.
The incident occurred at Lugwijini Location in Mbizana at about 15:30 yesterday, February 13, when a G4S cash transporting van came under attack.
“It is alleged that the suspects travelling in two vehicles, a Toyota Fortuner and double cab bakkie, blocked off the road and started shooting at the G4S vehicle. An unmarked police vehicle was also shot at but no injuries were sustained by the police officers.
“However, an innocent motorist, aged 28 years, was caught in the combat and fatally wounded,” said police spokesperson, Colonel Priscilla Naidu.
Naidu said that one G4S crew member sustained a gunshot wound to his thigh and the suspects took his firearm and that of his partner.
The G4S vehicle was blown up and caught alight.
“It is not yet clear if any money was taken during the incident. The matter is being investigated by the provincial organised crime investigation team,” Naidu added.
Suspects fled the scene and no arrests have been made.
