A man (30) from Margate in Kwa Zulu Natal was admitted to hospital under police guard after he was allegedly shot incidentally by his accomplices while he was trying to grab the box containing money when they were allegedly robbing G4s security guards who were collecting money from Siyaphambili Hotel and Bar in Elliotdale on October 30, 2023.
According to Hawks spokesperson, Captain Yolisa Mgolodela, he was arrested by the Hawk’s Cash In-Transit (CIT) task team, Crime Intelligence (CI), Tactical Response Team (TRT), Elliotdale Visible Police and detectives, National Intervention Unit, Queenstown Public Order Police, various Traffic agencies and Disaster Management team for allegations of an attempted Cash In-Transit robbery, attempted murder and possession of unlicensed firearm and ammunition.
“It is alleged that on G4S, security guards were collecting money from Siyaphambili hotel and bar when they were accosted by three armed suspects shooting at them. One of the suspects allegedly grabbed the box containing money but is reported to have been accidentally shot by his accomplices and fell next to the cash box,” said Mgolodela.
She added that to avoid the inevitable, his other two accomplices allegedly fled the scene on foot and disappeared into the nearby bushes.
Mgolodela confirmed that money was not taken, a 9 mm pistol with a serial number and live ammunition was found next to the injured suspect, who allegedly indicated that he was from Margate in Kwa Zulu Natal and his accomplices were from Chris Hani and Mandela Park Informal Settlements in Mthatha.
“Preliminary investigations also revealed that a security guard robbed the firearm of a certain company from Queenstown at Ngqamakhwe in September this year. The suspect was treated on the scene by paramedics and later transferred to hospital where he is kept under police guard. He is expected to appear in Elliotdale Magistrate’s Court as soon as he recovers. The police are looking for the escaped suspects and the driver of the Avanza, which allegedly dropped them off at a nearby river.”
