MIGHTY Eagles FC made a historic moment this past weekend after winning 3-0 against Fort Hare University FC in the provincial decider held in Alice.

This is Mighty Eagles’ first season competing in the ABC Motsepe League. They are the first team in history to qualify for the Nedbank Cup last 32 from a lower division in the Eastern Cape province.

This is also a historic victory for coach Sibusiso “Popo” Mapompo, who has qualified for the Nedbank Cup last 32 for the second consecutive time. In 2023, coach Mapompo guided FC Ravens to the Nedbank Cup last 32 and was narrowly beaten in the last 16 by Chippa United FC 2-1 in East London.

This year, he is planning to do better as Mighty Eagles consist of skilful and experienced players.

The Mighty Eagles’ technical team will now need to prepare their squad, as they are expected to go toe-to-toe with the best teams from the Premier Soccer League.

The Nedbank Cup draw is expected to be held next year, and Mighty Eagles FC could face any team, even the Soweto Giants, Orlando Pirates or Kaizer Chiefs FC.

Coach Mapompo stated that when the match arrives, they will be prepared to face any team.
