Internationally recognised singer, dancer, actor, and choreographer Sonwabiso Sakuba held auditions for the upcoming production of the legendary isiXhosa drama, Buzani kuBawo, in East London’s museum hall on 1st February 2025.

Written by Witness Kholekile Tamsanqa in 1957, Buzani kuBawo is a classic isiXhosa drama centred around the age-old tradition of parents choosing a bride for their son. The storyline explores family relationships and the conflicts that arise when traditional expectations clash with changing values.

“We are seeking a talented cast of 18 isiXhosa-speaking actors based in East London to bring this iconic story to life,” Sakuba told the Express. He mentioned that even though the story is quite old, it remains relevant today.

“The response to the call for auditions was exceptional. We had significant online interest. Auditionees were asked to prepare monologues that showcased their best acting abilities, and the competition was tough. It was interesting because we rarely see Xhosa productions and plays being staged in theatres in the Eastern Cape, yet there are so many of them.”

Sakuba, who has cultivated and nurtured many talented artists in the province, has toured the world and garnered accolades. He says he fell in love with theatre and performance at a very young age.

“I remember watching Sarafina when the performing bug bit. I was captivated by people telling a story through song and dance, and I instantly knew that was what I was going to do.”

Buzani kuBawo will premiere and be performed live at the Umtiza Arts Festival, set to take place in May. “We are looking to do a national tour thereafter.”
