CHRIS Hani District Municipality (CHDM) is mourning the passing of its former executive mayor and speaker, Mxolisi Koyo.

CHDM executive mayor, Lusanda Sizani, said the municipality was deeply shocked and saddened by the news of the untimely passing of CHDM former speaker, Mr Mxolisi Koyo.

“Mr Koyo, was a rare breed and a selfless servant of the people. He served the people of Chris Hani District Municipality with diligence and displayed great humility in carrying out his responsibilities throughout his tenure,” Sizani said.

He said during Koyo’s term in council he worked tirelessly to ensure that the community had equal access to basic services.

“He served in various positions since he joined CHDM, from being the Portfolio Head for Technical Services, Portfolio Head for Integrated Planning and Economic Development (IPED), Executive Mayor between 2011-2016, and later became the Council Speaker between 2016-2021, where he gave his all in driving the District Development Agenda,” said Sizani.

As the former Speaker of Council, he played a key role in deepening democracy and connecting the district with communities. He lifted the CHDM flag high, representing it in different platforms and he was also elected as SALGA EC Chairperson.

“Mr Koyo will always be remembered for his hard work and dedication in the service to his people. We remain committed to his legacy of serving the people of Chris Hani District, continuing on the solid foundation he laid for us all. We convey our heartfelt condolences to his family, friends and comrades, and wish them strength under this time of grief,” Sizani said.
