Christmas came early for entrepreneurs in the Eastern Cape as the first-ever annual Phanda Kasi Entrepreneurial Summit brought them treats, tips, and tricks of the trade. After a series of build-up campaigns, the event took place in Mdantsane, East London, on 22 November.
Aimed at making funding, access to basic business support, and socio-economic growth accessible for businesses in townships and rural areas, the attendees gained invaluable knowledge. Entrepreneurs from different sectors and industries had an opportunity to showcase their products and services, network, and trade with other businesses. They also participated in dialogues and conversations that will help shape the future of entrepreneurship in the province.
The event was graced by Laduma Ngxokolo, Creative Director, Designer, and Founder of Maxhosa Africa, a brand said to have turned local culture into a cultural phenomenon around the world. Speaking at the summit, Ngxokolo shared inspiring stories of his own entrepreneurial journey, from being an entrepreneur in the township to becoming an internationally renowned brand.
He started out creating his garments from his bedroom, using a machine his mother left him. His story, like many others, is one of struggle and frustration, but he refused to give up. “I struggled to get financial assistance; I knocked on so many doors, including the mayor’s, but came back with nothing.”
Ngxokolo got his lucky break when Nelson Mandela Metro University stepped in to help him. He encouraged the attendees not to give up. One of the attendees, Sandy Hair Studio owner Sandisiwe Nkopo, said, “Thank you Phanda Mzansi for giving small businesses a chance to be known in the township.”
Eight business owners in the Buffalo City Metro were given free exhibition stalls to market their products and services while promoting their brands and elevating their businesses.
