The death toll from the head on collision that happened on the N2 road in Payne just outside Butterworth on Monday, December 9 between an Opel Corsa and a Nissan NP200 has risen to four.

Department of Transport provincial spokesperson, Unathi Binqose, said drivers from both vehicles, a male and a female, died on the scene while the female passenger from the NP200 was rushed to hospital with serious injuries.

“This takes the number of fatalities to 6 from two separate crashes on Monday alone following another fatal crash that claimed 3 lives earlier in the day on the N2 near Butterworth,” he said.

In an earlier incident involving a bakkie and a seven seater Toyota, three people had initially died on Monday with six people rushed to hospital.

“The death toll has climbed to four in the crash involving a bakkie and a seven seater on the N2 road just outside Butterworth. An adult female from the six people who were rushed to hospital succumbed to her injuries and died in the early hours of this morning (December 10),” he said.

A case of culpable homicide, Binqose said, has been opened with SAPS in Mthatha.
