NGQELENI – An additional suspect linked to a violent cash-in-transit robbery in Ngqeleni in July 2025 has been arrested by the Mthatha Serious Organised Crime Investigation of the Hawks, working with the OR Tambo Tactical Response Team (TRT).

The arrest took place on 23 January 2026.

The G4S convoy, carrying cash from Port St Johns to Mthatha on 26 July 2025, was allegedly ambushed at Mafini, Ntlaza by a group of armed suspects travelling in multiple vehicles.

The suspects apparently opened fire on the convoy in a brazen attack.

Following careful investigative work conducted by the team and close cooperation with specialised SAPS units, a 28-year-old male suspect was apprehended at his Mafini homestead. He is expected to appear in the Ngqeleni Magistrate’s Court on Monday, 26 January, facing charges of cash-in-transit robbery.

Investigations are ongoing, and further arrests remain a possibility.

The Provincial Head of the Hawks in the Eastern Cape, Major General Mboiki Obed Ngwenya, said,
“This arrest sends a clear message that, no matter how bold criminals think they are, the Hawks in the province together with our law enforcement partners will relentlessly pursue justice and dismantle networks that threaten our communities.”

Members of the public are urged to continue reporting criminal activities anonymously via Crime Stop on 08600 10111.
