Six people have died while seven sustained injuries in a collision involving a bakkie and a minibus taxi on the R61 road near Corana Village, just outside Mthatha this morning at about 07:40.
According to the spokesperson for the Eastern Cape transport department, Unathi Binqose, it is alleged that a bakkie with five passengers on their way to a traditional ceremony at a nearby village, crashed into the back of a stationary taxi that was loading a passenger. The bakkie overturned.
“All five men at the back of the bakkie died on the scene, while one passenger (man) from the taxi also died,” Binqose said.
The injured, including the driver of the bakkie, were rushed to hospital with injuries ranging from serious to minor. “The taxi driver escaped unharmed.”
